Light Duty Diesel Trucks are very popular as they are good for towing and hauling loads as work trucks. Maintained properly they can easily last over 300,000 miles. As with gasoline engines, changing the oil regularly is extremely important. Follow your manufacturer’s recommendation which typically requires oil changes every 5,000 miles. Be sure to use oil specifically designed for diesels which will be 15W40 oil such as Delo or Rotella. Most manufacturers have diesel specific oils which work well. We do not recommend using full synthetic oil in diesels as diesel specific synthetics are very uncommon and have not been shown to improve performance or engine life.
Diesels need unlimited air supply so having a clean air filter is more important than for gasoline engines. The condition of the air filter should be checked every oil change and be changed when it looks dirty. Most diesel trucks do have an air filter reminder light, however they are not very accurate.
Unimpeded fuel supply is also critical for diesel engines. The fuel filter is typically changed every 15,000 miles which is more often than for gasoline engines which typically require new fuel filters every 30,000 miles. We highly recommend you follow your trucks maintenance schedule since repairing diesel engines is very costly.
